IPPT Deferment, MCs & Medical Exemption — What Actually Works

Short version: you cannot defer a 12-month window, and a short MC does not exempt you. Here is the rule that does.

Can you "defer" IPPT?

Not in the way most NSmen mean it. The requirement is a 12-month window, not a single appointment, so there is no date to postpone — you are expected to take the test at some point inside the window once you are fit. Missing one booked slot is not an offence; ignoring the whole window is what makes you a defaulter.

What an MC does (and does not do)

Per MINDEF on ask.gov.sg: the MC your doctor issues is recognised as a valid medical excuse — but you are exempted from the annual IPPT requirement only if you have 6 months continuous or 9 months cumulative medical exemption within the IPPT window. A two-week MC after a sprained ankle excuses that period; it does not clear your window.

Endorse it, don't just keep it

MINDEF advises booking a medical review via Manage Medical (eHealth) on OneNS to get your medical excuse endorsed by your unit Medical Officer, and informing your NS unit as you are excused. An unendorsed civilian MC discovered at a Summary Trial is a much weaker position than an endorsed one.

The straddle trap

If your 6-months-continuous or 9-months-cumulative excuse straddles two IPPT windows, MINDEF's answer is blunt: you are not exempted from the annual requirement for either window (ask.gov.sg). The months must fall inside one window.

"But my MO excused me — why was I charged?"

Because, as MINDEF explains, the onus is on the individual to check whether the excuse period meets the 6/9-month criteria. If it does not and the window closes unfulfilled, you are deemed a defaulter and can be called to a Summary Trial — where you will have the opportunity to present your medical certificates to the Disciplinary Officer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 3-month MC exempt me from IPPT?

No. Per MINDEF, exemption requires 6 months continuous or 9 months cumulative medical exemption within the window.

Can I defer my IPPT window?

No — the requirement is a 12-month window, not a fixed date. You take the test at any point inside it once fit.

My excuse straddles two windows. Am I exempt?

No. MINDEF states you are not exempted from the annual requirement for either window when the excuse straddles both.
